Meet Sara: Seeking Flexibility Led to Surprising Success

Individuals experiencing frustration in their careers typically have unique problems.  Helping them solve those problems is the best kind of recruiting.

For Sara, her problem was flexibility. She needed a better way of balancing the demands of her personal life and the desire for success in her career.

Her problem was solved by Lyon Real Estate in Sacramento, California. It’s a great “Canvas Story” of how listening, thoughtful evaluation, and a focus on creative solutions that lead to successful outcomes for everyone involved.

A Work-Life Balance Deficit

Sara started her path to becoming a real estate agent by recognizing she was languishing in the small business where she worked.

I worked for my family’s business for 11 years, but it was never really a great fit for me.

I wasn’t interested in the work and so I couldn’t really serve my customers in a way that they deserved. I got to a point where I needed to do something that I liked.

But, it wasn’t just the dissatisfying work that caused her to seek something new.  There was a deeper need not being met.

I had two young children at home, and there were so many days where I couldn’t have quality time with them. I tried to introduce options to get some flexibility, but it just wasn’t possible.

My husband could tell I was unhappy. I kept asking myself, what can I do well that allows for flexibility?

I had to take matters into my own hands.

Building Trust With Those Who Understand

Taking matters into her own hands started with an internet search, but quickly transitioned into a new set of professional relationships focused on her success.

I had no idea what I was looking for. I was just searching job boards and found job postings by Lyon.

I took their assessment, which helped me figure out my strengths. I liked that they wanted to know a lot about me to make sure I was a good match.

I remember my first conversation with my recruiting coordinator, Belinda. Everything lined up. I knew this was something I wanted to do, but I still felt anxious.

Could I really do this?

My fears were quickly put at ease.

Lyon expects its agents and managers to encourage each other, and they do. These are not sharks; they are looking to make others better. This gave me the confidence I needed.

Becoming Successful in a Second Career

Starting a new career takes courage and success does not come easily.

My first year was difficult, but I knew it would be and they were honest about that from the beginning. But I was hooked up with a mentor who was so kind and invested quality time with me.

I’d feel discouraged sometimes, but everyone had my back. I could always find help and that led me to success after success after success.

The key to these hard fought successes was staying focused on her original goal.

My life is so different now. I’ve gone from one end of the spectrum to another in terms of flexibility and work/life balance. I don’t have to pick up my babies after dark!

Quality of life is so important in our office. Where else can you get that!?

This career has transformed my life. I can be with my kids and I feel supported from my fellow agents since we all pick up the ball for each other. I love my job!

Sara joined Lyon Real Estate in 2014 and has already distinguished herself as one of their high-performing agents. You can read more about Sara at her website.
